Inauguration of Maj. Akshay Girish Memorial Trust Scholarship

Maj. Akshay Girish Memorial Trust collaborated with Jain (Deemed-to-be University) to provide scholarships to deserving undergraduate students, and to motivate students to pursue a career in the Armed Forces or Civil Services by preparing them to attempt the UPSC entrance exams and SSB interviews for selection into the uniformed services.

Maj. Akshay Girish Memorial Trust Scholarship was inaugurated on March 26, 2019 at SCS, JAIN, Jayanagar. Two students from the third year degree programmes and one student from the second year degree programme were selected for the scholarships for the academic year 2018 – 19. A scholarship amount of Rs. 30,000 each was given to the final year students and Rs. 15,000 was given to the second year student.


Who is Maj. Akshay Girish?

Maj. Akshay Girish who made supreme sacrifice during the Nagrota attack on November 29, 2016 was a former student of JAIN. Akshay was among the seven soldiers, including two officers, who were killed after suicide bombers armed with guns and grenades stormed a military base in Nagrota. In his honour, his parents started the Maj. Akshay Girish Memorial Trust, which will issue scholarships every year.

Maj. Akshay was inducted to the 51 Engineer Regiment of Bengal Sappers in 2003. He was still pursuing his post-graduation at JAIN when he had applied for National Defence Academy (NDA). He discontinued the course and reported for training in Pune after which he was posted in Kashmir and Chandigarh followed by Nagrota in Jammu.
